Using our expertise to build Africa’s largest COVID-19 temporary hospital

Using our expertise to build Africa’s largest COVID-19 temporary hospital

by Ceri | Nov 17, 2020 | Newsletter Article

In June this year, we designed and built Africa’s largest dedicated Covid-19 temporary hospital at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Western Cape Department of Health commissioned us to transform four exhibition halls into four separate recovery wards for the facility.

Scan Display has worked closely with the CTICC for many years, with the company’s Cape Town branch building exhibition infrastructure and stands for shows like Mining Indaba, Design Indaba Expo, Investec Cape Town Art Fair and Africa Oil Week.

Although building a temporary hospital was not something we had done before, our team of architects, interior designers, quantity surveyors and project managers took on the challenge of creating the hospital’s infrastructure, plumbing and electrical requirements.

The project’s brief included the following specifications:

  • 1 600 running metres of hard wood walling to partition 863 beds
  • Oxygen, electricity, Internet, nurse calling and plumbing for each patient
  • Wired Internet connection to create a paperless facility
  • Over 50 plumbed basins
  • 30 custom-made shower units for staff
  • Extra patient toilets and showers in the marshalling yard, with multiple marquees and covered walkways
  • Nurses stations, a physiotherapy unit, treatment rooms, pharmacies, donning and doffing areas and macerator rooms
  • Signage, patient notice boards, directional signage, and other graphics
Working on the project during lockdown Level 4 was not easy. ‘Site’ meetings went online, with up to 50 participants planning the project via Zoom. With only a two-day notification before the start of the build, Scan Display brought suppliers out of lockdown. Council submissions were made, and Fire Chief approval given, during the build. The company’s production team faced its own set of challenges: wearing hard hats, Perspex visors and masks, and maintaining social distancing added to the build’s complexity.

Our Cape Town Sales Manager, Jane Steel, explains how we were able to put the skills learnt in our industry during the past twenty-plus years to good use:

“Exhibitions and events need thorough planning and creative problem solving when things do not go to plan. Our project management experience was critical in creating this healthcare facility in such a short time frame.”

We have expanded our range to include the following new products: the Gazebo Kiosk, Portable LED Fabric Lightbox and Zoom Backdrops.

The Gazebo Kiosk is a portable 1m x 1m aluminium kiosk, with a foldable shelf and canopy. It is lightweight and packs into a small carry bag. It is ideal for product activations and promotions and can be used as a ticket booth, both indoors and outdoors.

Our Portable LED Fabric Lightbox is made from specially-designed 50mm aluminium profiles. It comes in a carry bag and is lightweight and really easy to set up. The Lightbox is freestanding, with fabric panels for graphics on both sides. It uses efficient LED lighting, making it a great sustainable product. It is ideal for showrooms, retail displays, reception areas, and exhibitions and events.
Our Zoom Backdrops can be customised to clients’ specifications.

The fabric graphics fit into a discreet aluminium frame (in black, silver or white) to create an eye-catching backdrop for all your Zoom meetings and webinars.

Supporting PinkDrive with outdoor branding

Supporting PinkDrive with outdoor branding

by Ceri | Nov 17, 2020 | Newsletter Article

We recently partnered with outdoor display equipment manufacturer, Zimstone, to provide PinkDrive with branded outdoor display products.

Zimstone donated the hardware and we produced the branded flags, pop-ups, and parasol and gazebo canopies.

PinkDrive is a non-profit organisation that promotes awareness of gender-related cancers in South Africa. The organisation’s trucks with their mobile screening units travel throughout South Africa, bringing the opportunity for screening and early detection to towns and rural areas all over the country.  During the last few months, the organisation has played an important role in managing the Covid-19 pandemic by adding testing for the virus to its services.

Together with Zimstone, we donated a range of portable branded display equipment including a gazebo, parasol, telescopic cluster flag, flag fountain, sharkfin flag, pop-open and A-frame for PinkDrive to use for its roadshows, open days and fundraising activities.

Our print division, Scan Print, designed and printed the fabric branding for the hardware. Scan Print does large format printing on vinyl and different kinds of fabric for branding for events, exhibitions, retail displays and mall activations. It has recently added wallpaper to its product offering and can design and print wallpaper for corporate, retail and home applications.

Scan Display has supported PinkDrive for many years, helping them with their activations at the Two Oceans Marathon and 94.7 Cycle Challenge.

Our MD, Justin Hawes, says:

“It was really good to be able to support PinkDrive, especially during October which was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They play such an important role in the fight against cancer.”
