Comment for Modulbox Germany | 21 October 2009

Scan Display is one of South Africa’s largest exhibition, event and display companies. The company recently formed a partnership with Modulbox Germany to manufacture and market the innovative Modulbox system in Southern Africa. Scan believes the modular, portable system will be the perfect marketing vehicle for companies during the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2010.

“The Modulbox has proved extremely popular in South Africa. In the few months since we launched the concept we have already sold units to clients ranging from one of the largest cellular providers in Southern Africa to a national retail chain. Customers love the idea of a portable exhibition stand or show room. They also like the idea that it is manufactured locally, thereby allowing them to benefit from international design at a locally-manufactured price,” says Justin Hawes, MD of Scan Display.

“We have already successfully road-tested one of our Modulbox units at Coca Cola Park, one of the FIFA World Cup venues,” says Hawes. (See attached picture.) Scan will have Modulbox units available for hire during the World Cup. Scan Display has been in the exhibition and display business since 1996. It has offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Gaborone and a network of distributors throughout Southern Africa. International business currently accounts for twenty-percent of Scan’s annual turnover. In just the last couple of months, Scan has worked with high profile international clients Bayer, MAN Ferrostaal, Boehringer Ingelheim and US exhibitions company, Freeman.

In 2006, Scan became the first South African member of the International Federation of Exhibition & Event Services (IFES), the international association of exhibition services providers. Scan was also the first African member of the United States’ largest exhibition contractors’ association, Exhibit Designers and Producers Association (EDPA). Scan Display has the industry experience and local knowledge to offer European clients a comprehensive exhibition, display and design service during the FIFA World Cup 2010.

CRAIDON DISPLAY LAUNCHES AT SIGN AFRICA

Craidon Display was officially launched at the recent Sign Africa show in Johannesburg. Prior to joining the signage and display industry, owner Craig Van De Venter spent 10 years working on chartered yachts.

Earlier this year Craig decided to settle back in South Africa and start his own business. Initially, Craig had thought of adapting the American idea of renting business and residential furniture. After some research into the local markets, his business idea evolved and he decided to establish a business supplying exhibition and display products.

Craidon Display’s range of services includes graphic design, stand design, hardware for exhibition stands, shell scheme, outdoor products, banner walls and printing for branding solutions. The company is targeting companies in need of branding, exhibition stands and displays, as well as graphic designers and digital printers. Craidon Display supplies more than just standard off-the-shelf units – the company provides customised solutions for clients’ specific requirements.

The company has also secured distribution rights for Africa for the Modulbox system and the Retail Merchandising Unit. (See attached pictures.)The modular stand-in-a box Modulbox is portable and easy to set up, making it ideal for roadshows, events and exhibitions. Each Modulbox can be custom-designed to a client’s specifications.

The Retail Merchandising Units are special-purpose retail kiosks that distinguish themselves from the usual retail carts by eliminating the customary wagon wheels and adding retail fixtures and shelving, special lighting and extra security features. Exhibiting at Sign Africa has been very positive for Craidon Display. The show generated a lot of interest in the company and its stand tied as winner in the ‘Best Small Stand – Up to 12m² floor space’ category. (See attached photo.)

SHOPPING CENTRES

30% OF RETAIL SPACE WASTED IN SOUTH AFRICAN SHOPPING CENTRES

On average South African shopping centres have around 30% of wasted retail space. This is the view of Justin Hawes, MD of Scan Display, which was exhibiting at the recent South African Congress of Shopping Centres (SACSC) in Johannesburg.

Hawes says, “While we believe South Africa shopping centres can and do compete on a global level we believe that most still have large areas of untapped retail space, for example in passageways and ‘dead-areas’. “

Hawes believes that these areas could be transformed into income-generating retail space through the placement of free-standing merchandising units. With this in mind, Scan Display recently launched the Retail Merchandising Unit (RMU).

These units create significant additional income for shopping centres and because they can be custom designed to fit in with the look-and- feel of any centre they add to the overall shopping experience. They are also ideal for smaller traders who do not need large retail spaces

The RMU is manufactured and marketed locally by Scan Display under licence from international industrial design company, SddRETAIL UK. SddRETAIL UK operates world-wide and has won numerous international awards for design excellence.

Danny Grayson of SddRETAIL UK says, ”We view South Africa as an important emerging market and are pleased with the positive impact the upcoming 2010 World Cup has had on infrastructure spending and development. “

Hawes adds, “The partnership offers South African retailers international design and expertise at local manufacture prices. Our policy is also to use locally sourced materials where possible.”

At SACSC, SddRETAIL UK and Scan Display exhibited the creative potential of their Retail Merchandising Units with a unit that was designed specifically with the 2010 Soccer World Cup in mind. (See attached picture).

High Impact Custom Designed Retail Displays

For those companies that want to stand out from the crowd when it comes to opportunities to market either products or position the corporate brand, custom designed retail displays and banners offer the perfect solution to their individual needs. These displays are usually used to increase the impact of point of sale marketing initiatives; however these versatile display units can be used in any environment where the company interfaces with customers and clients. These opportunities for retail positioning include trade shows and conventions, as well as sporting and cultural events, as well as product launches and road shows.

retail displayThe custom designed retail displays are especially useful where the product message needs to be disseminated to as many people as possible, such as the aforementioned road show. The light weight and portability of the custom displays make them ideal for this use as they can be transported from event to event with very little effort. These retail display units are also extremely easy to erect so they should present no problem to even experienced marketing employees and junior marketing personnel who are usually found erecting the display units during the road show.

Custom designed retail displays are also extensively used at the point of sale, where the highly visible nature of the displays can serve to differentiate products from the competition. With supermarket shelves rapidly filling with competitive products sourced from all over the world point of sale displays are rapidly becoming indispensable marketing tools for the South African manufacturer. These point of sale custom designed retail displays can be manufactured to designs specified by the customer.

New manufacturing technology and printing processes mean that the designs available to the customer are now almost limitless. Banners which are traditionally an extremely important part of any retail display can be produced in almost any size and the new printing processes mean that colours are even more vibrant than ever before. The client can specify unique designs that incorporate such elements as the corporate or brand logo into the custom designed retail displays. All that is required to ensure a one of a kind display is the supply of material in a suitable high resolution form. This graphic material will ensure that the end product is of the best quality.

The custom graphics can be incorporated into industry favourite designs of retail displays, such as those featuring tear drop banners or the industry standard flag banners. For added impact hanging banners and full display solutions, which are used extensively at trade shows and conventions can also be tailored to meet the individual requirements of the organisation.

Custom designed retail displays offer extremely attractive returns on the initial investment by the company. These retail displays are characterised by their low cost and quick production cycles. The hard wearing vinyl material that is used in the manufacture of the retail displays is extremely hard wearing and can be used over and over again.

Companies like Scan Display specialise in manufacturing custom designed retail displays that conform to the unique requirements of the individual client. They can offer advice based on years of experience as to the correct solution to all of the clients’ design needs when it comes to various custom display options.
