Dear fellow EDPA member,
Scan Display is one of Southern Africa’s largest exhibition, event and display companies. Since its formation in 1996, Scan has grown its distribution network to include a head office in Johannesburg, branches in Cape Town, Durban and Gaborone, and partners throughout Southern Africa. Last year Scan became the first African member of the EDPA.
Scan’s product offering extends from custom-built stands to the full range of exhibition services.
International business currently accounts for twenty-percent of the company’s annual turnover. In just the last couple of months, Scan has worked with high profile international clients Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim and US exhibitions companies, the Giltspur Group and Freeman.
I will be attending the 2009 EDPA Annual Conference in Palm Springs at the beginning of December and it would be great to meet with you there. If you would like to set up a time to chat, contact me on +27 11 447 4777 or [email protected].

On average South African shopping centres have around 30% of wasted retail space. This is the view of Justin Hawes, MD of Scan Display, which was exhibiting at the recent South African Congress of Shopping Centres (SACSC) in Johannesburg.
Hawes says, “While we believe South Africa shopping centres can and do compete on a global level we believe that most still have large areas of untapped retail space, for example in passageways and ‘dead-areas’. “Hawes believes that these areas could be transformed into income-generating retail space through the placement of free-standing merchandising units. With this in mind, Scan Display recently launched the Retail Merchandising Unit (RMU).
These units create significant additional income for shopping centres and because they can be custom designed to fit in with the look-and- feel of any centre they add to the overall shopping experience. They are also ideal for smaller traders who do not need large retail spaces. The RMU is manufactured and marketed locally by Scan Display under licence from international industrial design company, SddRETAIL UK. SddRETAIL UK operates world-wide and has won numerous international awards for design excellence.
Danny Grayson of SddRETAIL UK says, â€We view South Africa as an important emerging market and are pleased with the positive impact the upcoming 2010 World Cup has had on infrastructure spending and development. “Hawes adds, “The partnership offers South African retailers international design and expertise at local manufacture prices. Our policy is also to use locally sourced materials where possible.†At SACSC, Sdd RETAIL UK and Scan Display exhibited the creative potential of their Retail Merchandising Units with a unit that was designed specifically with the 2010 Soccer World Cup in mind. Craidon Display was officially launched at the recent Sign Africa show in Johannesburg. Prior to joining the signage and display industry, owner Craig Van De Venter spent 10 years working on chartered yachts.
Earlier this year Craig decided to settle back in South Africa and start his own business. Initially, Craig had thought of adapting the American idea of renting business and residential furniture. After some research into the local markets, his business idea evolved and he decided to establish a business supplying exhibition and display products.
Craidon Display’s range of services includes graphic design, stand design, hardware for exhibition stands, shell scheme, outdoor products, banner walls and printing for branding solutions. The company is targeting companies in need of branding, exhibition stands and displays, as well as graphic designers and digital printers. Craidon Display supplies more than just standard off-the-shelf units – the company provides customised solutions for clients’ specific requirements.
The company has also secured distribution rights for Africa for the Modulbox system and the Retail Merchandising Unit. (See attached pictures.)The modular stand-in-a box Modulbox is portable and easy to set up, making it ideal for roadshows, events and exhibitions. Each Modulbox can be custom-designed to a client’s specifications.
The Retail Merchandising Units are special-purpose retail kiosks that distinguish themselves from the usual retail carts by eliminating the customary wagon wheels and adding retail fixtures and shelving, special lighting and extra security features. Exhibiting at Sign Africa has been very positive for Craidon Display. The show generated a lot of interest in the company and its stand tied as winner in the ‘Best Small Stand – Up to 12m² floor space’ category. (See attached photo.)

The 7 things Exhibition Designers Focus on to Create a Harmonious Stand with Impact
The ultimate goal of exhibition designers is to create a stand that is eye catching, relevant to your product or service and one that attracts potential customers like a magnet. Here are the seven main point focussed on to achieve this goal;
- Create harmony and not a hazardous environment. By combining factors like layout, lighting, colour, charts, exhibits, outreach planes and fine planning this can be achieved.
- Highlight the focus point. It’s important to attract the viewers’ attention using your featured product or service.
- Less is more. Since people will be walking past hastily, especially if you’re located at the end of their tour, you have to have a short and powerful message that will attract them.
- Incorporate a theme. You have to create a good first impression whilst revealing the core company principles.
- All signs should be eye-catching. Exhibition designers are especially good at creating a look and feel that will help you stand out from all the rest of the exhibitors.
- Always keep the target audience in mind. Your product has a specific target market, and your goal is to attract everyone who falls in that category.
- Careful conceptualization of stand layout. The designers will need to determine the exact layout early on during the planning stages to avoid unnecessary changes in the nick of time.
