In these hard economic times it is more important than ever for corporates to make sure that the corporate gifts they give have meaning beyond a pure branding exercise. The women at the Thusanang Sewing Centre in Soweto create bags, table clothes, table mats and coaster sets – all ideal for corporate gifts with a purpose.

“Not only are our products functional, they are also symbols of hope from a community where unemployment runs at around 70%,†explains Judith Thobakgale from the Thusanang Sewing Centre. The Centre was started in June 2008 as an income generating project for unemployed women in Braamfisherville, on the outskirts of Soweto.
“Gone are the days of giving meaningless corporate gifts which end up thrown into a drawer. Companies should choose something that is not only nice to look at but that also makes a very real difference in the lives of fellow South Africans,†says Justin Hawes, MD of Scan Display, corporate sponsors of the Thusanang Sewing Centre.
As firm believers in the power of exhibitions, Scan Display recently built and sponsored stands for the Thusanang Sewing Centre at Markex Johannesburg and Africas Big Seven. Scan’s sponsorship also extends to day-to-day administrative support for the Sewing Centre.
The women currently involved at the centre are the sole breadwinners in their homes. They hope that the Centre will become productive to the point of being able to invest back into the community by teaching orphaned teenage girls a trade and supporting other community-based projects.

Scan Display has launched a range of Retail Merchandising Units (RMU’s) specifically designed to allow retailers to capitalise on previously unusable space within shopping centres.
Scan’s Retail Merchandising Units are manufactured locally in partnership with SddRETAIL UK, who have received numerous awards for design excellence. This new partnership therefore offers South African retailers international design at local manufacture prices.
Shopping centres
“Many large shopping centres have areas which are not utilised to their fullest potential. These architecturally unique, compact yet stylish RMU’s allow retailers to rent out this space, creating additional retail revenue,†explains Justin Hawes, MD of Scan Display.
Small traders
“Scan’s RMU’s also create an opportunity for smaller traders, who do not need a large shop floor area, to get into shopping centres. This in turn stimulates the growth of small businesses,†says Hawes.
Features
RMU’s are special-purpose retail kiosks that distinguish themselves from the usual retail carts by eliminating the customary wagon wheels and adding retail fixtures and shelving, special lighting as used in traditional merchandising, and additional security features.
They are portable and can be designed to complement the unique architecture of the location or brand identity.
To demonstrate the versatility of these flexible merchandising solutions, SddRETAIL UK recently conceptualised a RMU design specifically with the 2010 Soccer World Cup in mind. (See attached picture).

Current thinking in the exhibit industry often treats rental and purchase as alternative financial strategies aimed at accomplishing different ends. These days virtually any trade show display of any type or quality can be rented or purchased. In some markets (such as North America and Europe) rental provides lower initial (and even lower overall costs due to costs of trade show exhibit ownership while delivering greater flexibility) whereas purchase provides certain undeniable accounting benefits. Consumers of trade show displays in these markets must weigh their options to determine what works best for their situation. In other markets (such as most of Asia) raw materials and labour are priced such that rental is rarely competitive. This is due to the disposable Build and Burn approach, which is so prevalent.
These are existing exhibit or display stand properties, usually older and sometimes worn (though not necessarily), originally built for another purpose, available for rental or purchase. Many exhibit houses have a few of these lying about. Some exhibit houses have built their businesses on them. Just as there is nothing inherently wrong with a used car, there is nothing inherently wrong with a used exhibit. It depends upon the exhibit itself. Used exhibits may require the services of an on site labour source (show general contractor, or a labour contractor approved through show management) to set up, and often the rental exhibit provider can provided those services as part of the rental package to the exhibitor
For years, the trade show display business was dominated by the concept of selling and owning one’s display properties. There are a number of reasons for this including accounting realities and the cultural history of the industry itself. But, in recent years, this has all begun change. At one time, the notion of rental exhibits would have been a category of display in itself, that is to say that at one time a rental exhibit would have been viewed as a type of exhibit, usually a property owned by an outside vendor (either the show general contractor, or an outside rental exhibit. company such as ourselves), which are stock properties that are rented to the exhibitor in a standard configuration, or a modified version of it. This is no longer the case. To learn more about Rental Exhibits call Scan Display at +27 11 447 4777
