Scan’s 2010 Soccer World Cup activations
Scan Display experienced a 350% increase in business for the month of June because of World Cup related jobs, with a variety of interesting projects including activations for Adidas, Budweiser, Sony, Globex, Football Federation Australia, the SABC, the City of Cape Town and the City of Johannesburg.

The adidas Jo`bulani Central (“House of Football”) was the largest custom stand Scan has built to date, with a floor space of 1 000m² (50m x 20m) and 5.3m high walls. Designed by Uniplan, Germany, and realised by Scan it served as the World Cup headquarters for adidas and included office space, media facilities, an entertainment area for VIP guests, and an exhibition showcase for the Adidas World Cup clothing range.

Other official World Cup sponsors that contracted Scan’s services included Budweiser – to create Man of the Match trophy cases – and Sony – to build VIP hospitality villages at the three main soccer stadiums.
The City of Johannesburg’s World Cup Public Viewing Area (PVA) at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown was another interesting project. The City awarded the tender for the PVA to Scan Display in partnership with Zanusi Brand Solutions.
Two hundred and forty thousand people attended the PVA, which featured an exhibition and retail village, a miniature soccer field, and live entertainment before and after match screenings – such as Brazilian samba bands, the Soweto Opera, a Japanese free style dance crew and popular African artists like Dudu Manhenga (Zimbabwe), Kunle Ayo (Nigeria) and Mandoza (South Africa). All games were screened live, and entrance was free of charge.

Some of the projects involved simultaneous activations at multiple locations throughout South Africa – such as the construction of 10 SABC media centres in nine cities in South Africa. Other projects involved multiple activations in a single city – for example the 13 information kiosks the City of Cape Town requested to provide tourists with accurate information.
Scan Display’s Managing Director, Justin Hawes, says: “The experience we gained was invaluable as we had the opportunity to showcase our company, our skills and our creativity to a new audience.”
The World Cup may be over but Scan Display is committed to ‘Keep Flying’ the flag. This is a campaign initiated by Draftfcb, which encourages South Africans to keep the spirit of the World Cup alive. Justin says: “The World Cup was a great event, and we need to ensure we bring about positive, lasting change from it. Scan Display intends to build on its experience from the event.”

Scan Display to showcase European innovation at Markex
Exhibitions, events and display specialist, Scan Display, will showcase European innovation in the form of a Modulbox at SA’s premier marketing and promotions trade exhibition, Markex Jhb 2010. The Modulbox was designed in Germany by Mo Systeme, and Scan has the exclusive rights to produce this product in South Africa.

Scan Markex 2010
The Modulbox has the typical German traits of intelligent design. For example, the closed box forms a 2.45m cube, making it easy to transport. The doors and floor open up or slide out in a variety of set-up combinations to fulfil different requirements, and the process is quick and simple. Additionally, the multiple doors provide a large surface area which lends itself to highly visible branding.

The result is a stand-in-a-box exhibition, retail and event solution. It is ideal for outdoor promotions or events, road-shows, exhibitions with limited set-up and break-down times – and more.
Justin Hawes, MD of Scan Display, says: “The Modulbox is very versatile and it was used extensively during the World Cup to create information booths and ticketing kiosks.”
The Modulbox will appear in an urban European scene to enforce the message that it is a product of first class European design, as well as to show it in a functional context.
Other exciting surprises in keeping with the theme have been planned for Markex, to ensure Scan’s stand inspires visitors to the show.
Markex will run from the 24 to 27 of August, at Sandton Convention Centre. You will find the Scan Display stand in Hall 2, stand C27.

Scan Display embodied the values of Design Indaba at this year’s show, striving for innovation blended with intelligent design.
As the show’s official service contractor, Scan was responsible for the design and project management of the exhibition. Through Scan’s use of cutting-edge display products, the expo structure itself became a showcase of design excellence and possibilities.
Rolled Carpet
Scan used Italian-imported rolled carpet for full-lay carpeting. This style of carpeting results in fewer joins in the

flooring and is neater and sleeker than traditional tile carpets. Black carpeting was used throughout the pavilion, overlaid with carpeted pathways in four bold colours which helped to demarcate different areas for visitors in a visually striking way.
Mike Purdham from Interactive Africa (the organisers of Design Indaba) says: “Constantly seeking to raise the bar, the Design Indaba Expo and Scan have collaborated to introduce a number of firsts to the exhibition industry. The 2010 edition saw the introduction of full-lay carpeting for the first time, and we have had an overwhelmingly positive response from exhibitors and visitors alike.”
Modulbox
Scan used an exciting addition to its product range, the Modulbox,
to create the Interactive Africa stand. The simple and compact nature of this stand-in-a-box makes it quick and easy to transport and construct, which is invaluable given the restricted time available for set-up and break-down.
Despite its simplicity, the box is customisable for a variety of layouts to maximise the available space and serve the varying needs of exhibitors.
Mike Purdham says of the Modulbox: “Its ease of use and quick set-up time gave us one less thing to worry about. The stand was one of the stand-out features of the 2010 Design Indaba Expo.”
Success
This was the fifth year that Scan has worked in partnership with Interactive Africa to create the Design Indaba Expo. This year’s show was the most successful in terms of visitor turnout – 29,000 visitors attended last year, while this year a record breaking 35,000 visitors passed through the doors.

Scan Display’s mobile exhibition system, the Modulbox, recently proved its outdoor versatility and stability when it withstood Cape Town’s notorious gale force Southwester on Camps Bay beach. This promotion was part of an extensive national roadshow which saw the Modulbox placed in various locations around Durban, Plettenburg Bay, St Francis Bay, and Knynsa.
Justin Hawes, MD of Scan Display adds, “Another characteristic of the Modulbox which impressed the client was re-usability of the box. The same customised box was used in seven locations in Cape Town and in several other cities making it a very cost-effective way to take a brand to a wide variety of audiences across a broad geographical area.”
The Modulbox is a modular, portable ‘stand in a box’ which is custom designed to a client’s specifications. Scan Display, in partnership with Modulbox Germany, manufactures this innovative system locally. This allows Scan to keep the price down while clients still benefit from cutting-edge German design.
“This promotion once again demonstrated the Modulbox’s superiority over other outdoor promotional spaces such as gazebos and shelters, when the stand stood true and proud in the face of winds of up to 50km per hour. It also demonstrated the Modulbox’s quick-set up time, versatility and re-usability,” concludes Hawes.

There is an entire industry built around the design and sale of trade show displays. Many companies that sell trade show displays have elaborate showrooms in major cities, and other companies sell displays over the Internet without a showroom. Typically a trade show display company will specialize in one type of trade show display. Internet companies tend to specialize in modular, portable, and hybrid trade show displays, while companies with large showrooms typically specialize in custom exhibit booths. To cut the costs of the exhibits, display manufacturers often use what is known as “exhibition systems” to build walls of the booths and add tailored elements manufactured from plastic, wood etc. to create a unique look of display.
