by Ceri | Jan 11, 2013 | Shell Scheme
The shell scheme is a familiar sight at trade shows. It consists of three walls, basic lighting and carpeting. In short, the shell scheme is exactly what the name suggests. It is a shell structure that makes it easy to set up the display. The feathers and window dressing are up to the exhibitor.
With most of the shell scheme displays coming in neutral colours the exhibitors must use a bit of creativity to stand out amongst the hundreds of display stands. Adding colour shapes, and a bit of furnishings are what you need to transform the units into master marketing pieces. You will want trade show attendees to remember your stand and for this reason, you have to go all out in creating a stunning display. Remember it is a shell and not a pre-made advertising display. It will be up to you to make it awe-inspiring.
Some tips to help you make the most of a shell scheme:
- Make sure the logo is prominently displayed and is bold to attract visitors.
- Keep the message simple – you only have five to ten seconds to get the attention of visitors.
- Make use of interactive displays to promote activity and interest.
- The furniture should fit the image and thus also the colour scheme.
- Don’t clutter the display. People fear cluttered spaces and will get irritated.
- Keep space open for easy movement of traffic in the display.
- Use bright colours to create an energetic atmosphere.
- Use pot plants and wooden furniture for a feeling of elegance.
- Use darker colours to create a feeling of stature or tension.
- Set clear goals for the exhibition – whether to have information distributed, sales, new leads, launch of a product etc.
- Furniture must be functional, yet attractive.

Professional exhibition designers will recognise the importance of a good first impression for the client. The client will not get a second chance at a trade fair to make that first good impression and as such the display stand should reflect every aspect of superior exhibition design to ensure the overall success of the display. Exhibition designers for instance, should recognize that the artwork should not be the ultimate goal, but rather the tool to effectively portray the client’s products and services. In addition lights, sound, space, lay-out, and point of sale materials should be used to ensure a coherent theme and appearance. There is no room for mistakes. As such select professional exhibition designers such as Scan Display, with a track record of award winning stalls to handle the design of your booth.

Why make use of exhibition designers?
Exhibits entail a lot of visual displays. Design forms an integral part of the displays and you will want professional exhibition designers to handle the project. Thousands of visitors will look at the displays and the professionalism as well as effectiveness of the displays will not go unnoticed. Apart from individual stands and visual displays, exhibition designers take care of floor plan design, electricity, ventilation, air-conditioning, various types of stands setup, and the seamless management of an exhibition. To this end you will want to use exhibition designers to ease the workload, ensure professionalism and to save costs at the end of the day. It is important to select exhibition designers that have a proven track record of completed projects and have a few awards to show as proof of their outstanding work. Select a company such as Scan Display that has the client profile and list of awards to ensure that your exhibition will be a success.

Craidon Display was officially launched at the recent Sign Africa show in Johannesburg. Prior to joining the signage and display industry, owner Craig Van De Venter spent 10 years working on chartered yachts.
Earlier this year Craig decided to settle back in South Africa and start his own business. Initially, Craig had thought of adapting the American idea of renting business and residential furniture. After some research into the local markets, his business idea evolved and he decided to establish a business supplying exhibition and display products.
Craidon Display’s range of services includes graphic design, stand design, hardware for exhibition stands, shell scheme, outdoor products, banner walls and printing for branding solutions. The company is targeting companies in need of branding, exhibition stands and displays, as well as graphic designers and digital printers. Craidon Display supplies more than just standard off-the-shelf units – the company provides customised solutions for clients’ specific requirements.
The company has also secured distribution rights for Africa for the Modulbox system and the Retail Merchandising Unit. (See attached pictures.)The modular stand-in-a box Modulbox is portable and easy to set up, making it ideal for roadshows, events and exhibitions. Each Modulbox can be custom-designed to a client’s specifications.
The Retail Merchandising Units are special-purpose retail kiosks that distinguish themselves from the usual retail carts by eliminating the customary wagon wheels and adding retail fixtures and shelving, special lighting and extra security features. Exhibiting at Sign Africa has been very positive for Craidon Display. The show generated a lot of interest in the company and its stand tied as winner in the ‘Best Small Stand – Up to 12m² floor space’ category. (See attached photo.)
