Scan Display ended the year on a high note with five wins at the Exhibition & Event Association of Southern Africa’s (EXSA) year-end function held at Expo Centre on 13 November 2008.
“It was a fantastic achievement to win five awards out of a possible 11. This has never been done before by any company in our industry so we are justifiably proud. To date Scan has also won the most EXSA awards in Association’s history,” said Justin Hawes, Scan MD.
The EXSA awards recognise excellence for EXSA members in their various fields of expertise and are aimed at generating an awareness of the importance of quality of service to the exhibition industry.
Scan’s design team comprises seven full-time interior designers, two graphic designers and a qualified architect.

Scan Display’s Durban branch recently hosted a client cocktail party to celebrate its move into larger offices. The party was held at the branch’s new premises in Briardene, where clients were entertained by an Afro Jazz band.
Scan’s MD, Justin Hawes, says: ”Our Durban office has grown considerably in the past couple of years making a move to larger premises inevitable. We are pleased to now have a print studio on site which will mean a quicker turnaround time for graphics and applications.”
Scan has been operating in KwaZulu-Natal since 2004 and has a team of account executives, exhibition designers, graphic designers and production staff committed to the region.
The Durban team was responsible for the design and production of the award-winning Three Cities Group stand at Indaba 2008. The exhibit won a Platinum award at the show, as well as the Exhibition & Event Association of Southern Africa’s (EXSA) 2008 Best Stand award in the ‘Custom Large’ category.
Scan Display is a specialist provider of display, exhibition and presentation products extending from large custom-built stands and portable systems to banner systems, brochure holders, display cases and clip frames. Scan also offers the full range of exhibition services including shell scheme, carpeting, electrics and furniture rental.

The look and feel of the Design Indaba Expo was taken to new heights this year thanks to Scan Display, the show’s official service contractor. Scan was responsible for the design and project management of the exhibition which showcases the best of SA design.
For the first time in its four year partnership with Design Indaba, Scan used its own shell scheme for the show. The company is the exclusive agent of the Unibox aluminium system in South Africa, and has pioneered its usage as an alternative to other over-used systems.
Jane Steel, Scan Display’s Account Executive on the project said, “Having worked on Design Indaba for the last three years, I could not believe how stunning the show looked this year, using the Unibox system.”
This opinion was shared by Design Indaba Expo Manager, Mike Purdham, who said, “People coming into the show did not stop gushing about how amazing it looked”.
Paul Hugo, Creative Director at Scan Display, has designed the exhibition every year since 2006. He believes this year’s show was the best he has seen. “The feedback from the client and exhibitors was an indication of the successful evolution of the layout and execution of this exhibition. We strive, in partnership with Interactive Africa, to creatively achieve something more every year within the parameters of budget and resources.”

When it comes to the exhibition medium, Scan Display puts its money where its mouth is, exhibiting at eight annual shows and conferences. Over the past decade the company has generated good business and grown its brand at local and international expos. The medium’s consistent return on investment has resulted in Scan allocating approximately forty-percent of its annual marketing budget to exhibitions.
Scan Display recently exhibited at Markex Cape for the third time since the marketing show’s launch in the Western Cape. Scan has successfully supported the Markex shows for many years, and its stands at the shows have been acknowledged with numerous organiser awards.
Gary Van Der Watt, Director of Scan’s CT branch, says that although this year’s Markex Cape may have felt smaller than the last one, the quality of visitors and the commitment from exhibitors was evident.
Van Der Watt adds: “The Scan stand was prominently positioned and well received by both existing and new clients. In an environment that demands innovation, a tactile quality and an interactive platform, Scan again demonstrated its ability to satisfy the brief.”
Other local shows which Scan supports are: Markex Jhb and KZN; the annual SAACI conference; Design Indaba Expo; Woodpro; and the Human Resources Development Africa show. Scan uses The Exhibiting Show in London and the International Federation of Exhibition & Event Services’ annual conference as a platform to showcase its services to the global market.

Scan Display’s stand was named Runner Up in the Medium Stand category at Markex & World of Events, held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 10 to 12 June 2008. The latest win means that the exhibition and display specialist has won an award at Markex Jhb for the last five years.
This year’s stand was smaller than previous years’. However, Scan spent more per square metre and achieved a better return on its investment, drawing visitors to the stand and generating an excellent database of leads from the show.
Scan launched its new rolled carpeting at Markex, using the product on the floor and walls of its stand. The carpet comes in large rolls and is cut on site to fit the space, ensuring a superior finish to the alternative carpet tiles.
Scan extended its rolled carpeting from the stand into the exhibition hall aisles to make the stand feel bigger than it was. It also used a high roof to create a feeling of space on the stand.
