If you are serious about getting sales leads and developing strong business relationships through the usage of your exhibiting stands, you should target decision makers. When visitors come into your exhibiting stands at a trade show, politely enquire about their positions at their company. If they are not key role players, get them to give you names of relevant persons, and don’t spend too much time in conversation. You want to focus your attention on key players ensuring that every minute at your exhibiting stands will count. It doesn’t mean that you have to ignore seemingly unimportant persons. Give every person the time of day, but ensure that the focus stays on key players. Target decision makers of potential client companies even before the trade show and invite them to visit your stand. Make a list of such persons and their roles for the consultants at the stand, ensuring that they know exactly who the persons are once names are mentioned.

The sales are not only made at the trade show stand, but also before and after. It is thus important to mail clients before and after with specials ensuring that you get more from the trade show stand than planned. Also consider teaming up with a related business to help promote each others’ products before, during, and after the event. If you are a software developer, you can for instance, team up with a computer hardware provider to promote complimentary products. In addition also offer free stuff at your trade show stand and loads of brochures. Create an open rather than close trade show stand which will be inviting and will have enough space to prevent traffic jams and customers leaving because they feel crowded.

Cluttered trade show stand display will confuse the visitor. Remember that visitors want choices, but too many choices will leave them confused. Make it easier on the brain to remember, by having a clean cut trade show stand display. Take the guess work out of play. The visitor must be able to immediately recognise what the trade show stand display is about without studying even one brochure. For this purpose clearly identify the objective in relation to the customer’s needs and have all your signage focus on that specific product or service. You want the idea to stick and as such should go bold, simplify the message, and ensure aesthetic appeal.

If you will book trade show stands for the first time, you will want to keep within a smaller budget. First observe and learn. You should have a long term goal with the trade show stands. You will use the knowledge and experience gained from the first trade show to plan the next one which will incorporate everything you have learned. For the first trade show, you may want to go with a previously used booth to save money. Go with more generic signs that can be used in future shows as well. Customisation should only come from the next show when you have a clear focus. Study various booths and plan ahead. Go with furniture rentals rather than purchasing furniture that will not be used in your future trade show stands.

Scan Display’s mobile exhibition system, the Modulbox, recently proved its outdoor versatility and stability when it withstood Cape Town’s notorious gale force Southwester on Camps Bay beach. This promotion was part of an extensive national roadshow which saw the Modulbox placed in various locations around Durban, Plettenburg Bay, St Francis Bay, and Knynsa.
Justin Hawes, MD of Scan Display adds, “Another characteristic of the Modulbox which impressed the client was re-usability of the box. The same customised box was used in seven locations in Cape Town and in several other cities making it a very cost-effective way to take a brand to a wide variety of audiences across a broad geographical area.”
The Modulbox is a modular, portable ‘stand in a box’ which is custom designed to a client’s specifications. Scan Display, in partnership with Modulbox Germany, manufactures this innovative system locally. This allows Scan to keep the price down while clients still benefit from cutting-edge German design.
“This promotion once again demonstrated the Modulbox’s superiority over other outdoor promotional spaces such as gazebos and shelters, when the stand stood true and proud in the face of winds of up to 50km per hour. It also demonstrated the Modulbox’s quick-set up time, versatility and re-usability,” concludes Hawes.
