Scan’s 2010 Soccer World Cup activations
Scan Display experienced a 350% increase in business for the month of June because of World Cup related jobs, with a variety of interesting projects including activations for Adidas, Budweiser, Sony, Globex, Football Federation Australia, the SABC, the City of Cape Town and the City of Johannesburg.

The adidas Jo`bulani Central (“House of Football”) was the largest custom stand Scan has built to date, with a floor space of 1 000m² (50m x 20m) and 5.3m high walls. Designed by Uniplan, Germany, and realised by Scan it served as the World Cup headquarters for adidas and included office space, media facilities, an entertainment area for VIP guests, and an exhibition showcase for the Adidas World Cup clothing range.

Other official World Cup sponsors that contracted Scan’s services included Budweiser – to create Man of the Match trophy cases – and Sony – to build VIP hospitality villages at the three main soccer stadiums.
The City of Johannesburg’s World Cup Public Viewing Area (PVA) at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown was another interesting project. The City awarded the tender for the PVA to Scan Display in partnership with Zanusi Brand Solutions.
Two hundred and forty thousand people attended the PVA, which featured an exhibition and retail village, a miniature soccer field, and live entertainment before and after match screenings – such as Brazilian samba bands, the Soweto Opera, a Japanese free style dance crew and popular African artists like Dudu Manhenga (Zimbabwe), Kunle Ayo (Nigeria) and Mandoza (South Africa). All games were screened live, and entrance was free of charge.

Some of the projects involved simultaneous activations at multiple locations throughout South Africa – such as the construction of 10 SABC media centres in nine cities in South Africa. Other projects involved multiple activations in a single city – for example the 13 information kiosks the City of Cape Town requested to provide tourists with accurate information.
Scan Display’s Managing Director, Justin Hawes, says: “The experience we gained was invaluable as we had the opportunity to showcase our company, our skills and our creativity to a new audience.”
The World Cup may be over but Scan Display is committed to ‘Keep Flying’ the flag. This is a campaign initiated by Draftfcb, which encourages South Africans to keep the spirit of the World Cup alive. Justin says: “The World Cup was a great event, and we need to ensure we bring about positive, lasting change from it. Scan Display intends to build on its experience from the event.”

Scan Display has launched a range of Retail Merchandising Units (RMU’s) specifically designed to allow retailers to capitalise on previously unusable space within shopping centres.
Scan’s Retail Merchandising Units are manufactured locally in partnership with SddRETAIL UK, who have received numerous awards for design excellence. This new partnership therefore offers South African retailers international design at local manufacture prices.
Shopping centres
“Many large shopping centres have areas which are not utilised to their fullest potential. These architecturally unique, compact yet stylish RMU’s allow retailers to rent out this space, creating additional retail revenue,†explains Justin Hawes, MD of Scan Display.
Small traders
“Scan’s RMU’s also create an opportunity for smaller traders, who do not need a large shop floor area, to get into shopping centres. This in turn stimulates the growth of small businesses,†says Hawes.
Features
RMU’s are special-purpose retail kiosks that distinguish themselves from the usual retail carts by eliminating the customary wagon wheels and adding retail fixtures and shelving, special lighting as used in traditional merchandising, and additional security features.
They are portable and can be designed to complement the unique architecture of the location or brand identity.
To demonstrate the versatility of these flexible merchandising solutions, SddRETAIL UK recently conceptualised a RMU design specifically with the 2010 Soccer World Cup in mind. (See attached picture).

About 60% of South Africa’s Blue Crane population resides in the Western Cape. Here the birds favour farmlands, particularly pastures and wheat plantations, above the indigenous Fynbos habitat. But climate change threatens this unusual success story. The western parts of our country are expected to be most hard hit by the extreme weather conditions that climate change brings, and existing agricultural practices could become economically unviable, with detrimental effects for the cranes.
Kerryn Morrison manages the ICF/EWT Partnership for African Cranes and, together with her passionate team of crane conservationists, is carefully monitoring the Western Cape’s Blue Cranes so that we can react to the signs of climate change well in advance of it becoming an insurmountable problem.
When I asked Kerryn how she came to be so passionate about cranes, she said they are a perfect flagship species that can be used to highlight environmental issues to people and so change environmentally destructive behaviour. Kerryn was just four years old when her nursery school teacher predicted she would work with animals, and she has never wanted to be anything other than a conservationist. Her dedication is not without reward, and she has received broad acclaim for her exceptional dedication to crane conservation, and is recognised as being instrumental in combating the trade in cranes that takes place throughout Africa on a daily basis. We are extremely proud of being able to say that Kerryn has grown her career with the EWT since 1995.
We will be celebrating the success of our crane conservationists on World Environment Day, on 5 June, with this year’s theme being ‘Your Planet Needs You – Unite to Combat Climate Change’. Learn more about this day and other EWT climate change projects by entering our online competition , open only to our loyal supporters, and stand in line to win a fabulous getaway to a South African destination.
